The Croatian Eagles had two teams playing for U.S. Adult Soccer Association Region II championships Sunday.
And the finals for both the Men's Under-23 and Women's teams followed the same storyline – much to the dismay of the Franklin club.
Each Croatians team took the lead, but ended up dropping up 2-1 decisions in Overland Park, Kan. Regional champions advance to the USASA National Cups, which are July 15 to 17 in Bowling Green, Kent.
UW-Oshkosh's Tony Starnes (Green Bay Notre Dame) put the Eagles' Under-23 side up in their match against Scott Gallagher, but the Missouri club scored twice before halftime and held on for the one-goal victory.
The Women's final pitted the Croatians against St. Louis, a team they beat 2-1 in a tournament opener Friday. Nicole Sperl (Wauwatosa West/UW-Milwaukee), who had two assists as the Eagles won all three of their round-robin matches, scored as the Croatians went ahead, but couldn't hold on.
