Madison United isn't one of the four teams vying for the final three spots in the Wisconsin Adult Soccer Association Major League playoffs, but they certainly made an impact on the race.
Marquette forward Andy Huftalin and UW-Whitewater midfielder Ryan Boyd (Waunakee) scored as Madison United knocked off United Serbians 2-1 in a rescheduled match Wednesday night at Serb Hall in Milwaukee.
United Serbians (10-4-3) will play at the league-leading Croatian Eagles (15-1-1) in another makeup game Thursday night knowing a win would give them a berth in Sunday's semifinals.
A draw Thursday would leave them on 34 points along with the Milwaukee Kickers (11-6-1) and Bavarian SC (10-4-4). The WASA website lists tiebreakers, but doesn't specify if a three-way tie is treated differently than one between two teams.
One team did clinch a playoff spot Wednesday night, though, turning the playoff chase into three teams battling for two spots.
Milwaukee Sport Club (11-4-3) joined the defending champion Croatians in the postseason thanks to a 3-3 draw with visiting Bavarians in a rescheduled match. The result gave Sport Club 36 points, two more than the Kickers and Bavarians and three ahead of United Serbians.
Huftalin and Boyd, who also play for the club's Under-23 team, put Madison United (8-6-3) ahead 2-0 on Wednesday before United Serbians pulled one back from the penalty spot.
But the home team couldn't find what would have been a huge equalizer – a tie would have meant they would need only a draw against Croatians to make the four-team playoff field – and lost to Madison United by a 2-1 score for the second time this season.
