National Premier Soccer LeagueJed Hohlbein (Middleton/UW) scored two goals and set up the other as the Madison 56ers beat the Milwaukee Bavarians 3-1 in a National Premier Soccer League Midwest Division finale Saturday night at Breese Stevens Field.

The Bavarians (8-2-2) clinched their first Midwest title last weekend and already are planning for the NPSL Final Four in two weeks – coach Andreas Davi held out several players coming back from injuries and played UW-Milwaukee goalkeeper Bryce Boyd (Milwaukee Marquette) as a forward for the final 37 minutes.

Andrew Wiedabach (Mequon Homestead) opened the scoring in the fourth minute for the 56ers (8-4-5 overall, 6-3-3 NPSL Midwest), taking a pass from Hohlbein in the middle of the box, touching it around a defender and finishing against Marquette keeper David Check, his former high school teammate.

Hohlbein converted a half-bicycle kick in the 21st, keeping his eye on the ball after central defender Henry Aiyenero's volley bounced into a crowd in front of Check.

And eight minutes after halftime, midfielder Keith Dangarembwa split open the Bavarians' backline with a pass that send Hohlbein in alone on Check. Hohlbein appeared to have touched it too far in front of himself and the ball baubled on the choppy turf, but his sliding shot found the far side of the net for his eighth league goal of the season.

UW-Milwaukee's Robbie Boyd (Milwaukee Marquette) got Milwaukee on the board with a tremendous 25-yard strike from the right side that zipped past Madison keeper Kyle Dillman (Madison La Follette) in the 62nd.

Peter Sanger (Wauwatosa East/UW-Milwaukee) looked to have given Milwaukee a chance to take an early lead, as he appeared to be fouled in the box in the third minute, but the Bavarians' penalty shouts fell on deaf ears.

The 56ers were awarded a penalty in first-half stoppage time when UW-Parkside's Kinkade Lo (Sussex Hamilton) was called for a handball after falling on the ball in the box, but Check dove to his right to stop the shot by midfielder Trevor Banks (Madison Memorial) and Hohlbein fired the rebound well over the crossbar.

Check back later for a more thorough match report.
